There’s all manner of incidental items a person might have. This is a list of many of these items. Keep in mind that many of these items are those that don’t exist in the modern day. In general, modern-day items like rope, canteens, and GPS locators are available. If you’d like a purchase difficulty for them, you can estimate by the following formula:

Industrial/Installation Technology

3D Printing Suite: This is a small-ish system, but usually large enough to take up part of a home office room. It allows the operator to print physical materials from premade templates (or templates created by the user). This means that someone may use Design to design a useful object, then use Build with the 3D printing suite to build it even if it would ordinarily require significant industry or long manual labor. The user’s Build still fills a Labor task, but instead of hours it takes minutes. It can even print metals using a metal putty compound that “dries” into refined metal.

This might make it seem like someone can cheaply construct any device imaginable, but there are limitations. 3D printing suites cannot handle volatile chemicals. Printing bullets, explosives, flammables, perfumes, corrosives, or similarly unstable materials is impossible. Additionally, designers of technologies implement copytheft protections on what they manufacture. Although it is possible to scan objects using a 3D suite, the copytheft protections will interfere with this process.

Teleconference Suite: This advanced teleconference suite will allow anyone within it to interact in real time and three dimensions with the holographic representations of other people. They might be in other teleconference suites or using bodyphones. This can also receive online avatars, although the movements of those avatars are often giveaways that they aren’t “real people” (even if a real person controls one). This is a room-sized technology, often involving a large conference room.

Military Gear

Biomedical Accelerator: Although listed as a military technology, few government military forces use it. Instead, this is devoted to military contractors, who usually only get legal authorization to use it when operating for a government. The biomedical accelerator is an arcane technology that manipulates the biochemical operations of the body. It looks much like an insulin pump, including two leads going to the body. While active, it will restore one spent Body Point to the character per hour. However, it also heavily drives the character. The system will accumulate one “quality hour” per hour towards a Labor so long as its active. Once the quality hours equal the character’s Recovery, the character suffers an Injury. Accumulated quality hours disappear at a rate of one point per day.

Combat Node: C4I2 networks, more commonly called “combat networks,” are a valuable and potentially pivotal part of combat operations. These can interface with phone hubs, though usually the phone hubs lead to military networks rather than general access telecommunications networks. These interleave information among all forces in the network. Even without a phone hub, they can join a network if at least one other node in the network is within a few hundred meters. The system includes display goggles, communication systems, body interface, visual identification, etc.

The combat node will relay information identified by the user. This means the user can identify enemies, neutrals, third parties, and allies, and those people and materiel get “painted” into the real-time map run by the network. The network will accumulate all information accumulated by all persons, including general mapping, and coordinate them into a single, coherent map. Usually, combat networks have a central computer system (often in a command vehicle) that coordinates and retains this information, otherwise information might get lost over time or if people drop out of the network.

Using a combat node, communication between warfighters is relatively easy. If trying to pierce interference, the network operates with the equivalent of two marks of Sensor Operations, and it will always Rote. If one person in the network becomes aware of something, it becomes part of the map and others who pay attention to that information can access it. Because of this, Information Analysis becomes an available sense skill. Everything the network has learned is “short range,” while everything else is out of range. Detailed information requires that this detail be entered into the network by somebody within it.

Personal Electronics

Desktop Computer: This is the ultimate form of power in the arcane age. Desktop computers have considerable processing power, storage, and rapid action capability. Ballistic busing, quantum validation, and other means all contribute to make desktop computers extremely stable and functional platforms. Desktop computers, unlike laptops and wearables, have no particular penalty other than their total lack of portability (they weigh in at 4-8 kg and are physically very large).

Laptop Computer: Laptops are something of an outmoded fashion – they’re too large to be “portable” by the arcane age definition, but they’re too small to have the power of a desktop computer. When performing Labors using a laptop computer, generally one reduces the total quality-hours per hour by one. If running arcane drafting software, then add an additional d6 difficulty. Apply the same difficulty to most incidental uses for a computer. However, these can connect to the Internet by way of a phone hub. Note that these penalties don’t apply to basic uses for a computer – word processing, browsing the Internet, and running even large and complicated spreadsheets are well within the power of a laptop.

Phone Service and Phone Hub: In the present day, land lines are underused. Indeed, land lines are a rather expensive means of communication because of their disuse, although they are very secure. Assume a monthly purchase difficulty of 7 for a land line. Most phones are cellular phones, which are relatively dirt cheap.

These function as ISP and wireless hub for online functionality. Indeed, the actual “phone” is just a wireless hub. The telephone functionality we know is a special attachment, although it’s also rather cheap. Television, radio, etc., all comes through the phone hub. Telecommunications is interplanetary – although “outages” might reduce the interplay to light speed (meaning seconds to hours between send and receipt), the primary bridges are high-bandwidth ansibles.

Wearable Computing: These are wearable applications that interact with a phone hub to allow telecommunications and basic computer operations. They generally can’t do much more than the apps you’re wearing. These are purchased as Fashion and Lifestyle selections. Every app is a device integrated into some article of clothing, jewelry, or other ornamentation. Basic items usually cost nothing – your “credit card” is often an ear piercing, for instance. It interfaces with the other apps and the phone hub through e-textiles in your clothing and by utilizing a form of swept frequency capacitive sensing to measure body actions. Thus, the body is literally the control surface. (The possibilities of this are, indeed, endless, and a few of them won’t be the subject of any part of this work.) Real Property

Owning a home (or a business office) is very desirable for many people. If you want to rent rather than owning, you should turn to Fashion and Lifestyle choices. This is for owning your own home, although you’ll have to turn to financing options.

Location

There are two parts to real property – location and construction. The location is where the thing is (no surprise). Where you put your home places a modifier on the base cost for the home. There are possible choices other than those below, but these represent the major selections.

Estate: You have a large plot of land. This is measured in acres – assume +1 difficulty per 10 acres. For +2 purchase, this is a rural or outland estate, though it likely has a town nearby (which the estate may directly border). Every 100 acres of land requires one Fashion and Lifestyle selection to maintain. Round fractions up, but less than 10 acres doesn’t require a selection.

Gated Community/Business District: For the lifestyles of the wealthy, this is a community where patrolling is regular or constant and actively tries to protect the privacy and security of its residents. This might also include a number of office parks, where there is regular security measure to secure the businesses.

Industrial Park/Gentrified Community: This indicates an area where there is rapid response emergency services and regular patrols, but the police are less likely to turn a blind eye to the people there.

Lower Class Urban: This is the kind of area where the police don’t like to go. The only real “enforcement” is by criminal groups. Strangely, in some cases, they’re actually effective for that purpose, and keep much of the crime down (in exchange for forced submission to their own criminal activities). Still, these areas are safer than militant zones, and if you have the money you can commute to better parts of town.

Lunar/Martian: Development on the Moon has been mostly on the far side, to prevent changes in lunar albedo. Development on Mars and the Moon is mostly for resource acquisition and development, but there’s a prevailing fear of birthing or raising children in these environments. Thus, no child under the age of ten is allowed on the Moon or Mars (though orbitals are perfectly fine, since they can emulate gravity).

Middle Class Urban: This is an area where police patrols and EMS are semi-regular or regular, and there is general safety. This can also include many suburban neighborhoods, most of which are either middle class urban or rural.

Militant Zone: Any property in a militant zone is an uncertain investment. There will be armed, coordinated teams of sociopaths roaming about, terrible people on the move, and if there are utilities they’ll be uncertain. For +2 purchase, this has self-contained utilities (not unwise).

Rural: Accessible, but perhaps off the beaten path, rural properties allow you to get away without leaving everything behind. You still get emergency services, though these will be smaller (perhaps only a few officers and a couple doctors who do housecalls in an emergency as part of EMS).

Solar Orbital: Solar orbitals lie between the orbits of planets, orbiting the sun itself. These are much more exposed to SFS, but they’re also isolated. Many of them have dangerous activities (that’s why you go to them, really), and most of these are essentially pirate ports for rogue asteroid claim jumpers and pirates.

Trojan/Orbital: You designate one planet or moon and what position you’d like. There are orbitals and trojans around Earth, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. There are facilities around Uranus, but these are devoted to military purpose. If you want to be in rogue asteroid mining, then one of these facilities is your starting point. They do provide gravity, and although it likely won’t be Earth gravity it’ll come close. These will also be under some military guard, and although some nations have laws against it (such as the United States), many nations use the military as police in these areas.

Wilderness: You’ve got a home in the middle of nowhere. Note that if the home has considerable acreage, then this is “estate” rather than “wilderness” – even if it takes all morning to go from your home to the front gates, the property itself will likely be very accessible. The price includes self-contained utilities – you have a generator, water supply, water recycler, etc.

Construction

So what’s actually on the land? Note that in many cases you may be in a co-op. If you have a walk-in in the city, then chances are it’s in a building with hundreds of others just like it.

Empty: An odd choice, but some people want an empty area. This might have growth, and could have a cluster of uncultured trees, but it’s not a developed area.

Industrial Complex: This is an area designed to allow for factories, industrial activities, engineering, arcane experimentation, or scientific studies. It’s more than a warehouse, but doesn’t have the functionality for human operations other than technical work. Note that the actual machinery and devices required are separate.

Large Business: This is an office building or something similar. It’s a very large complex, and might get used as a rental property. If used as rental space to others, the character may absorb Access loss, as for a Storefront, against a difficulty of d10.

Small Complex: This is almost certainly a two-story, with many rooms that can be applied to many purposes. The classic is a large manor-type building, but an extended building with an atrium or a small residential complex will also qualify. This might not be a residence at all – any facility requiring a small complex design will work, such as a floor of an office building.

Small Home: This contains two or three bedrooms and one or two baths. It has kitchen and common areas, and likely has a garage. This may be one or two story, depending on the neighborhood and size of the lot.

Storefront: This is a place designed to act as a small shopping area, like a gas station or a convenience store. It might be so large as a small bookstore. It is designed to attract. If the character is running a business, the GM might allow the character to absorb spent Access by rolling d12 against whatever skill would be most appropriate in running the business.

Studio: This is a single room plus bath and maybe a closet, but it’s large-ish and can accommodate more than one person if they’ve no need for privacy whatsoever. Alternately, this might just be a warehouse for storage.

Walk-In: This is a single-room shack or other walk-in accommodation. It serves one person, and has little enough space to do that.
